Virtual Meeting Deadline Extended for Condominiums!

The Ontario government has extended the timeframe for condominium meetings to be held virtually to May 31, 2021!

Previously, the deadline was November 21, 2020. However, with COVID-19 cases rising throughout the province, the decision was made to extend the deadline to avoid any risks associated with in-person meetings in the coming months. This means that Ontario condominiums can hold any required meetings virtually and permit electronic voting (without the need to pass a by-law approving this type of meeting/voting format) until May 31, 2021. This includes owners’ meetings, director’s meetings, and Annual General Meetings.

This said, there were no extensions related to the timing to hold AGMs that had previously been postponed at the beginning of the pandemic. As a reminder, the following timelines continue to apply for the purpose of holding AGMs:

  • If the AGM was originally scheduled to be held between March 17th and July 24th, it must now be held by October 22, 2020.
  • If the AGM was originally scheduled to be held between July 25th and August 24th, it must now be held by November 21, 2020.
  • If the AGM was originally scheduled to be held after August 24th, it must be held by the original deadline.

The Government’s decision to extend the deadline for holding virtual meetings should come as positive news for condominium corporations and Boards trying to navigate through the COVID-19 pandemic!
