Correction: Although the Green Energy Act is Repealed, Condominium Obligations to Report Energy and Water Use Remain
In an earlier blog post this week, we mentioned that the repeal of the Green Energy Act on January 1, 2019, did away with the requirement for condominiums in Ontario to report their energy and water use.
Well…that was wishful thinking on our part unfortunately!
It turns out that although the Green Energy Act is no longer in effect, the energy and water reporting obligations have now transferred to a regulation under the Electricity Act, which came into force on – you guessed it – January 1, 2019! In other words, the reporting requirements carried over with no disruption.
So the purpose of this blog is to correct our previous post (which we took down). We certainly apologize for any confusion that we may have caused…we were just so hopeful that we could eliminate a task for our already busy managers and boards. ?
So what are the energy and water reporting requirements going forward?
Condominiums that are at least 100,000 square feet (gross floor area) must now begin reporting this year by submitting their report for the 2018 calendar year by July 1, 2019.
Condominiums that are at least 50,000 square feet but less than 100,000 square feet (gross floor area) don’t begin their reporting until 2020 (for the information from the 2019 calendar year).
Going forward each year, condominiums must report their energy and water use information (for the previous calendar year) annually by the July 1 deadline.
For more details about the information that must be reported and where to report the information, check out the province’s guide.
