Trash Talk: Updates on the City of Ottawa’s Multi-Residential Waste Diversion Strategy

In 2024, the City of Ottawa approved a Multi-Residential Waste Diversion Strategy, requiring all multi-residential properties (buildings with 6 units or more) to participate in the City’s green bin organics program in order to receive waste collection services from the City of Ottawa. Eligible properties began transitioning to the green bin program starting in the fall of 2024.

A significant milestone has been reached, with the City announcing that over 75% of Ottawa’s multi-residential properties have now implemented the green bin organics program! All remaining eligible properties should be onboarded by the end of 2028.

The City has also announced that it is introducing several new initiatives aimed at reducing waste and increasing participation in recycling and organics programs in multi-residential properties across Ottawa.

It is researching potential pilot projects for the multi-residential sector, including those related to program delivery, outreach, education, technology and building operations. At this stage the City is seeking examples and ideas from stakeholders to shape future pilot projects to improve residential waste diversion – so if you have a waste diversion strategy at your building that is working well – consider sharing it with the City!

In addition, the City has launched a new Waste Reduction Champions Program, inviting residents living in multi-residential properties to apply to become a Waste Reduction Champion. Selected volunteers will have access to training, tools and support from the City, and will help to promote better waste reduction and diversion practices at their properties. Interested applicants can apply through the City’s website and must have the support of the building’s manager before submitting an application.
